Buying a capybara, the world’s largest species of rodent will cost at least $1,100, not including the price of special permits needed. They must be raised in pairs because without others of their kind they become depressed.
You have to build a large fenced-in area, and since they’re semi-aquatic, they need to swim regularly. Capybaras need to gnaw often to keep their teeth trim, and will chew through your wires and cords given the chance.
Owners have to shell out for daily rations of hay and let their capybaras roam to chew grasses too.
