Ridiculously Expensive Paintings In the World

#26 “Orange, Red, Yellow” (1961) by Mark Rothko ($86M)

The mesmerizing Color Field painting by Mark Rothko, the “Orange, Red, Yellow” was sold at the Christie’s from the estate of David Pincus for $86 millions, on May 8, 2012.

Mark painted rectangular blocks playing with all shades of vibrant orange, red and yellow colours. The blend of these colours in the rectangles does not reflect a distinct quality, thus lacking optical breaks. The painting glimmers from within, throwing a spectacular appeal for the observer.

Mark Rothko was a Latvian-Jewish but at the age of 10, he along with his family had migrated to the United States. As an artist, he is also categorized as an abstract expressionist.
