#29 “Black Fire l” (1961) by Barnett Newman ($84.2M)
Barnett Newman was an American artist who is counted among the prestigious abstract expressionists and regarded as one of the finest colour field painters. His paintings are explicitly composed and intend to communicate with art lovers.
“BlackFire l” is a black palette on a pale canvas depicting the pain and sorrow of Newman. The abstract painting was made while he was mourning the death of his younger brother George.
Barnett believed that when an artist intends to invent or change, then he reverts to black as it is a way of clearing the platform to welcome new ideas. The“Black Fire1” was sold for $84.2 million at the Christie’s auction of Post-War and Contemporary Art, in New York on May 13, 2014.
