#4 “The Card Players” by Paul Cézanne ($250M)
Qatar, an oil-rich Arab nation, created a benchmark in the international intellectual hubby by purchasing a Paul Cézanne painting, The Card Players, for more than $250 million. The deal struck in one go, making it the highest price ever paid for a work of art and upscaled the modern art market.
The Qatar Royal Family bought one out of the 5 paintings of Paul Cézanne from a Greek shipping magnate, George Embiricos. The other four versions of the Card Players painting can be found in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Musée d’Orsay, the Courtauld, and the Barnes Foundation.
Cézanne’s work is an artistic endeavour that illustrates the world of art in the late 19th and early 20th century.
