#5 “Number 17A” by Jackson Pollock ($200M)
A painter and an introducer to the famous drip technique, Jackson Pollock was an American artist that created the masterpiece Number 17A. The painting has an abundant layer of bold colours creating a complex colour vortex where it becomes impossible to differentiate between the top and bottom layer of the painting.
The use of bold colours like black, blue, yellow, red and orange on the fibreboard enhances the image, parallelly the white dripping grabs our attention diagonally up the image.
In 2015, Number 17A was bought by billionaire Kenneth C. Griffin, an American hedge fund manager, for $200 million. It is said to have broken all records for the most expensive painting sold at that point in time.
