Peru offers some gorgeous and culturally rich sights and sounds to its visitors, but it also has a not-so-pleasant side to it as well. There have been reports of several carjackings, armed robberies, and kidnappings. As a result, the country has garnered a reputation for being a not-so-safe tourist spot.
While such crimes are an obvious threat, tourists also face the double-whammy of financial crimes as well. Peru is also known for a very high number of credit card frauds as well.
However, if you do decide to visit the country, then make sure to stick to mainstream tourists hiking trails, and avoid showing off expensive possessions and jewelry.
Finally, gang activity is usually at night, so step out after sunset with much caution.
