Did You Know These Monumental Things Were Invented By Women?

The Ice Cream Maker by Nancy Johnson

#23 The Ice Cream Maker by Nancy Johnson

Who doesn’t love a delicious cone of ice cream on a warm summer day? Well, we have Nancy Johnson to thank for the automatic ice cream maker.

Earlier, ice cream was made by the “pot freezer” process. Now, this was time-taking and the final product lacked consistency.

Johnson developed a device containing hand-cranked spatulas fitted inside a deep cylinder that would facilitate the scraping of ice cream from the walls of the jar.

Nancy Johnson patented this device, and this churn is used to-date for making ice cream!

Several ice cream parlors in the UK and US have not let go of their traditional churns due to the belief that only the traditional device can produce the best taste.
