#27 The Exterior Steel Staircase by Anna Connelly
In 1887, Anna Connelly developed and patented the first fire escape. Her designs were a blessing to high-rise buildings as they became more secure.
Plus, this staircase helped people escape without being injured or falling from a height due to panic.
This design was also instrumental in helping firefighters haul water easily to some specific areas. Connelly’s invention resulted in some of the initial building codes in the area.
Buildings in New York City were required to have a second escape route or emergency exit to deal with emergencies.
Essentially, this invention does not just save lives during an emergency but also helps prepare for it!
