13. The Northumberland Bestiary – $4.1 million (1200s)

We may not really hear this word these days, but ‘Bestiary’ was quite a common word back in ancient Europe and referred to documents that described animals, or ‘beats’ in detail. Similarly, the Northumberland Bestiary is one such amazing collection of animals and mythical takes surrounding them.

It was written in the 1200s and includes stunning illustrations of elephants, panthers, donkeys, and several other animals. This rare copy of the book was auctioned for $4.1 million and is currently in the possession of the J. Paul Getty Museum.
